Why People Move to Atlanta
- Home to Coca-Cola, Delta Air Lines, UPS, and the CDC
- Hartsfield-Jackson is the world's busiest airport — direct flights everywhere
- The BeltLine trail is reshaping neighborhoods citywide
- Rich cultural scene: High Museum, Fox Theatre, diverse culinary landscape
- No state income tax deduction for retirement income (good for younger workers)
What to Expect
Atlanta is big, spread out, and car-dependent — that's the trade-off for affordable space in a world-class city. Traffic on I-285 and I-85 is legendary, so neighborhood choice matters more here than almost anywhere. The culture is vibrant, diverse, and deeply rooted in history. Summers are hot and humid, winters are mild, and fall is the city's best-kept secret — perfect weather from October through November.
Neighborhoods Worth Knowing
Midtown is walkable and cultural — Piedmont Park, the High Museum, and excellent restaurants. Buckhead is upscale with high-rise condos and luxury shopping. Decatur (technically its own city) is family-friendly with a charming downtown square, great schools, and a food scene that rivals the city proper. East Atlanta Village is eclectic and creative. Alpharetta in the north suburbs has tech companies and top-rated schools.
Cost of Living
Housing drives the budget. ITP (Inside the Perimeter / I-285) runs 15–30% more than OTP (Outside the Perimeter). Groceries are on par with national averages. Georgia's income tax tops out at 5.49%, and property taxes in Fulton and DeKalb counties can be high — check millage rates for your specific neighborhood. One upside: no state tax on Social Security benefits.
Local Tips from Our Crew
Live close to where you work. A 10-mile commute in Atlanta can take 45 minutes in traffic. MARTA rail is useful if you're along the north-south or east-west lines — Midtown and Decatur are great MARTA-accessible neighborhoods. The best way to explore neighborhoods before committing is to walk the BeltLine Eastside Trail from Piedmont Park to Ponce City Market. For authentic Southern food, hit up Busy Bee Cafe or Mary Mac's Tea Room.
