Why People Move to Sumter
- Shaw Air Force Base is the city's primary economic engine
- Among the most affordable housing markets in South Carolina
- Swan Lake Iris Gardens — one of only a few public parks in the U.S. with all eight swan species
- Sumter County schools offer a range of magnet and traditional programs
- Strong military support infrastructure and veteran community
What to Expect
Sumter is a military town at heart — the rhythm of the community tracks closely with Shaw AFB operations. The cost of living is very low, the people are welcoming (especially to military families), and the pace is slow. Swan Lake Iris Gardens is genuinely beautiful and worth visiting before you even unpack. The city center is modest but functional, and Columbia is about 45 minutes west for anything Sumter doesn't have.
Neighborhoods Worth Knowing
Neighborhoods north of Sumter along US-15 tend to be newer with slightly higher price points. The area closest to Shaw AFB is convenient for active duty families and has rental properties geared toward military tenants. Downtown Sumter has older homes with character and lower prices. The Alice Drive corridor has established families, good school access, and mid-range housing.
