Why People Move to Greenville
- Falls Park on the Reedy and the Liberty Bridge draw visitors worldwide
- BMW, Michelin, and GE Aviation anchor the Upstate economy
- Top-ranked downtown with over 120 restaurants and shops on Main Street
- Blue Ridge foothills offer hiking and outdoor access minutes from the city
- Lower cost of living than Charlotte or Raleigh with comparable amenities
What to Expect
Greenville punches well above its weight. The downtown is walkable, clean, and packed with independent restaurants — it regularly wins "best Main Street in America" rankings. The pace is relaxed but the city is genuinely cosmopolitan thanks to international companies that brought European and Asian expat communities. Summers are warm, winters are mild, and the mountains are close enough for a Saturday morning hike.
Neighborhoods Worth Knowing
Downtown Greenville (especially the West End and North Main areas) is walkable and vibrant — ideal for young professionals and empty nesters. Augusta Road has established homes and a village feel. Simpsonville offers newer subdivisions with good schools at lower price points. Travelers Rest, just north, is a former railroad town turned foodie destination with Paris Mountain State Park nearby.
Cost of Living
Housing is Greenville's value proposition. A renovated three-bedroom near Augusta Road lists for $350K — comparable homes in Asheville or Charleston would be $200K more. Rent for a one-bedroom downtown is around $1,300. SC's relatively low property tax rates help, though Greenville County's rate is higher than the state average. Plan for car-dependent living outside of downtown.
Local Tips from Our Crew
The Swamp Rabbit Trail is Greenville's crown jewel — a 22-mile paved trail connecting TR to downtown. If you can live near a trailhead, do it. Parking downtown is easier than you'd expect thanks to free garages, but avoid Main Street on First Friday art walks unless you're there for the event. Our favorite post-move meal is Jianna for Italian or Sushi Bar for the omakase. And if you're house hunting, check the FEMA flood maps carefully — some Reedy River-adjacent properties have flood risk.
